FIRE LOAD CALCULATION (FLC)

"Fire load Density" is a term used to describe the potential severity of a fire within a specified space. It is a form of hazard assessment and is used to determine the level of fire risk that exists within a defined area.

It indicates the quantity of heat liberated per unit area when a building and its contents are completely burnt. In simple words the Fire Load Density is the heat output per unit floor area (Unit – Kcal /M2 or MJ / M2) & calculated from the calorific value of the materials present.

The amount of releasable energy is directly related to the mass of combustible materials. The calculation of the Fire Load Density is the basis for

  • Determination of the classification of the occupancies for the fire grading of buildings &
  • Fire Risk Assessment.
