PROCESS SAFETY MANAGEMENT

Highly hazardous chemicals (toxic, reactive & flammable liquids and gases) are found in numerous industries. If not managed safely during manufacture, transport, storage and use, these chemicals can cause sastrous incidents with extremely dangerous and sometimes fatal consequences.

Many such significant process safety incidents occurred throughout the 1970's to 1990's which instigated the development of process safety regulations in the developed countries.

Thus, a regulation called OSHA 1910.119, Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals (29 CFR 1910.119)’ was issued in year 1992 by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

With this background and the recent major process safety incidents in India, the Indian chemical industry is looking towards implementing Process Safety Management.
